Will Social Media Really Help My Business?

Marketing and Technology are everywhere in today's most successful businesses. It's best if I answer the question in the title immediately and then explain why.

Yes, but it's not as simple as posting a picture and asking people to buy your product or service.

For a very long time, businesses have marketed their products and services with commercials. Think of a commercial that you love. Something that gets stuck in your head.

The first commercial I think of is from Geico Insurance Company. They've marketed the idea that "switching to Geico could save you 15% or more on car insurance" by pinning that phrase with other obvious information. In the commercial I think of, the other obvious information is "playing cards with Kenny Rogers gets old pretty fast". The commercial then switches scenes to Kenny Rogers singing his song The Gambler while playing poker with other random guys. I laugh every time I see or even think about it.

The reason Geico's 'well did you know', caveman, and gecko commercials are so successful is because of the out-of-the-box ideas. They didn't produce a commercial of 2 people talking about insurance and explaining why GEICO is great. Those probably exist in the past and that's where they belong. GEICO has several funny commercials and I can talk about them like a favorite tv show.

Imagine sitting in a board room and saying "We're gonna do a commercial for our insurance company by saying switching to GEICO is so easy a caveman can do it". On paper, that's pretty weird. In a 2019 study released by Statist, GEICO spent $1.62 billion on advertising that year. The astronomical budget far exceeded the $400 million or less that other car insurance companies invested in ads. They pay that much for advertising because IT WORKS.

I know what you're thinking. They have money. GEICO can hire celebrities, actors, and they have a Hollywood-esk production value. This is where I can breakdown why Social Media is important for your business and how you can do it.

Social media is 100% free. Most cell phones have a fantastic camera and video recording quality. Let me introduce you to Content Marketing. Content Marketing is defined as a type of marketing that involves the creation and sharing of online material (such as videos, blogs, and social media posts) that does not explicitly promote a brand but is intended to stimulate interest in its products or services. Simulate interest in it's products or services. That's the key.

As a business owner or entrepreneur YOU know why you're interested in your career. Think outside of the box. How can you make others see what's cool about what you do or what you offer?

I follow a hand painting sign company on TikTok (@HurferHandPainted) They've never reached out to sell me anything. I follow them because they mash up good music and have a single camera shot that records a guy gracefully hand painting custom signs for businesses. It's interesting to me, it's relaxing to me, and I am genuinely curious. If I ever need a hand painted sign, I'll be on that website with the quickness. If anyone asks me about hand painted signs, I'll recommend that TikTok channel. They didn't pay me to write this blog or share their information. I do it because I like it.

By posting pictures, videos, blogs, and educational material through your business, you could be someones go to expert in your field. Go to any social media platform (Facebook, Instagram, TikTok) and look for a service you're interested in. Find 3 pages with a huge following and take notes on the type of material they're releasing, the quality, and how often they post.

It's not easy, it takes work. There will be a learning curve. Some posts will succeed, some posts will fail. Don't be afraid to learn something new and it's okay if it takes awhile. It's not a race, but the sooner you get on board the sooner you will see results.
